In November, Americans will head to polls to cast their ballot for the next president of the United States and select their city, county and state representatives.
Voter registration is required for anyone who wants to vote on Election Day. Here’s what you need to know to be prepared to vote on Nov. 5.
San Joaquin County residents and Californians alike can now register to vote. Registration can be done online by filling out the online application at registertovote.ca.gov.
The application is available in 10 languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Korean, Tagalog, Thai, and Vietnamese, the California Secretary of State website states.
Those interested in receiving a paper voter registration application can do so by picking one up at county elections office, library, DMV offices, or U.S. post office.
“It is important that your voter registration application be filled out completely and be postmarked or hand-delivered to your county elections office at least 15 days before the election,” the California Secretary of State website states.
You can also call (800) 345-VOTE(8683) or email Elections Division staff to request a paper voter registration application be mailed to you, the California Secretary of State website states.
For Californians, the deadline to register is 15 days before Election Day — Oct. 21.
Same-day registration is also an option.
“Same Day Voter Registration, known as Conditional Voter Registration in state law, is a safety net for Californians who miss the deadline to register to vote or update their voter registration information for an election,” the California Secretary of State website states. “Eligible citizens who need to register or re-register to vote within 14 days of an election can complete this process to register and vote at their county elections office, polling place, or vote center. Their ballots will be processed and counted once the county elections office has completed the voter registration verification process.”
Same-day registration or conditional voter registration information can be found at sos.ca.gov.
There are a few boxes that must be checked off to qualify to register to vote.
